Are Neanderthals or other extinct species represented in myths?

(My answer to this question at Quora.com)

Neanderthals coexisted with modern humans for tens of thousands of years until their extinction around 45,000 years ago.

With their coarser features and large, muscular frame, they’re a good candidate, in my book, for the origin of the common European mythological image of the ogre.
